About This Series
Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty quarter is one of the great designs of the early 20th century, though it had a complicated run. The original 1916 type shows Liberty with an exposed breast; a 1917 revision added chain mail armor. The date placement wore off quickly on early strikes, creating a swarm of dateless coins still found in old lots. Key dates include the 1916 (under 52,000 struck), the 1918/7-S overdate, and the 1927-S. The 1925 redesign added a recessed date to address the wear problem. Collectors who want the full set by date and mintmark face a genuinely difficult challenge.
