Flowing Hair Half Dollar

Flowing Hair Half Dollar

Silver

1794–1795

About This Series

The Flowing Hair half dollar was among the first coins struck by the newly opened US Mint in Philadelphia. Robert Scot designed the Liberty portrait with flowing hair, the same design used on the silver dollar of the same era. Struck only in 1794 and 1795, these are early American coins with all the survival challenges that 230-plus years imply: low mintages, heavy use, and a long time to get lost. Examples in any grade command serious collector attention, and anything above Fine is a meaningful find. The 1795 has more varieties and more survivors than the 1794.
