About This Series
The Flowing Hair dollar is the first silver dollar struck by the United States Mint, and few coins carry more historical weight. Robert Scot designed the obverse; the 1794 issue had a mintage of roughly 1,758 coins, and fewer than 140 are confirmed to survive. The 1794 sold at auction in 2013 for over $10 million - a record for any coin at that time. The 1795 had larger production across several die marriages and is more available, though still scarce. Both years command collector attention entirely out of proportion to their original mintage figures.
