About This Series
The Royal Mint introduced the silver Britannia in 1997, ten years after the gold version. Original coins were struck to the Britannia silver standard of .958 fine; purity improved to .999 in 2013. Like the gold series, the silver Britannia used Philip Nathan's standing Britannia design until 2013, then shifted to annual reverse changes. The 1 oz coin is the most widely collected denomination. Proof versions with frosted designs on mirror fields are the premium collecting option. The 1997 first-year issue carries a collector premium, particularly in proof, as the inaugural example of the series.
