History

The Royal Mint has no founding charter or record of a definite start. Its history is usually traced to the reign of Alfred the Great (871 to 899), whose Monogram Penny is one of the first coins to state that it was minted in London. For centuries it was based in London; in 1967 a new mint at Llantrisant in South Wales was announced to meet demand for decimal coins, and the last coin struck in London, a gold sovereign, came in November 1975.

Since 31 December 2009 its trading business has been run by The Royal Mint Limited, a company wholly owned by HM Treasury. The first gold Britannia bullion coin appeared in 1987, issued to counter the growing popularity of South Africa's Krugerrand, and the first one-ounce silver Britannia followed in 1997.
