History

The Casa de Moneda de México was founded in 1535, when Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza received the royal order to establish it, as growing trade in New Spain made a mint necessary. It was the first mint in the Americas, and its first coins were probably struck in April 1536.

Under a law published in January 1986, it is a decentralised federal agency, governed by a board chaired by the Secretary of Finance, that strikes Mexico's legal-tender coins on the orders of the Banco de México, the central bank that began operating in 1925. The Banco de México Libertad series dates from 1981, when one-ounce, half-ounce and quarter-ounce gold coins were set, along with a one-ounce silver piece; smaller gold and silver sizes were added in 1991.
