History

The first mint in Pretoria opened in 1892 on Church Square. After gold was discovered near Johannesburg in 1886, President Kruger's Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek saw an urgent need for its own coinage. That mint closed after British forces occupied Pretoria in 1900, and a branch of Britain's Royal Mint opened in Pretoria in 1923.

The South African Mint has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank since 1988. The first gold Krugerrand, introduced in 1967, was struck on the mint's historic Oom Paul press, a German machine built in 1891 for the first Pretoria mint. The mint makes the bullion Krugerrand jointly with Rand Refinery and also issues it in silver, and it added the Big 5 gold and platinum bullion coins in 2020.
