History
The Royal Canadian Mint opened in Ottawa on 2 January 1908 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint. Until then, Canada's coins had been struck in England, mostly at the Royal Mint in London. Its gold refinery opened in 1911, and on 1 December 1931 an Act of Parliament made it a Canadian institution, a branch of the Department of Finance.
Since 1 April 1969, under the Royal Canadian Mint Act, it has been a Crown corporation reporting to Parliament through the Minister of Finance. The Gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979 as an investment coin, and by 1982 the refinery had reached 99.99% purity in commercial gold processing. The Silver Maple Leaf followed in 1988, containing one troy ounce of 99.99% fine silver with a five-dollar face value.
