History

One root of China's state mints is the Fengtian Machinery Bureau, founded in Shenyang in 1896 to ease a shortage of coin and the forerunner of today's Shenyang Mint. Shortly before the People's Bank of China was founded in late 1948, printing and minting works in the northern liberated areas were merged.

Today the Shanghai, Shenyang and Nanjing mints belong to China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation, a state-owned enterprise funded by the People's Bank of China. They strike circulating coins and precious-metal commemorative coins. The gold Panda, issued by the People's Bank of China in 99.9% pure gold, was developed at State Factory 614, later the Shanghai Mint, in 1982 and went on sale overseas in October 1982.
