History

Congress created the United States Mint with the Coinage Act of April 2, 1792, establishing the nation's first national mint after the Constitution was ratified. It was placed in Philadelphia, then the capital, and its building there was the first federal building erected under the Constitution. David Rittenhouse was the first director.

An 1873 law made the Mint a bureau of the Treasury Department, and it still produces coins at Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco and West Point and runs the Fort Knox bullion depository. A ban on private gold ownership dating from 1933 was lifted at the end of 1974. The American Gold Eagle was first struck on September 8, 1986, and the one-dollar American Silver Eagle on October 29, 1986. Platinum coins were authorized in 1997, and palladium American Eagles went on sale in 2017.
