About This Series
The US Mint began striking the American Platinum Eagle in 1997, the first platinum bullion coin issued by a national mint. Each coin is 1 troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum with a $100 face value. John Mercanti's Statue of Liberty obverse has run unchanged since the series began; the reverse used a single eagle design through 1997 before moving to an annually or thematically rotating design. Proof versions are struck at West Point. Mintages are far smaller than the Gold or Silver Eagle, making the series a niche but closely watched corner of modern US bullion.
