About This Series
The Susan B. Anthony dollar, designed by Frank Gasparro, was the first US circulating coin to depict a real woman. It arrived in 1979 but failed commercially: the coin was too close in size and color to a quarter, and the public rejected it almost immediately. Production ended after 1981, though mint sets kept it technically alive. A one-year revival in 1999 supplied coins for transit fare systems already programmed for them. The 1979-P Wide Rim ("near date") variety and the 1981 proof and mint state coins, particularly from San Francisco, are the dates collectors focus on.
