About This Series
The Sacagawea dollar arrived in 2000 to replace the Susan B. Anthony dollar with something more visually distinct. Glenna Goodacre's obverse portrait of Sacagawea with her infant son Jean Baptiste became one of the more recognized modern coin images. From 2009 onward, the reverse began rotating through Native American themes, one design per year. The most famous oddity in the series is the 2000-P "Mule," struck with a Washington State quarter obverse paired with the Sacagawea reverse - one of the stranger mint errors in modern US coinage. The coin stayed largely out of commerce despite the Mint's efforts.
