About This Series
Frank Gasparro designed the Eisenhower dollar, released in 1971 as the first dollar-sized coin in the US since the Peace dollar ended in 1935. The reverse borrows the Apollo 11 mission insignia; subtle variations in how Earth appears created the collectible Type 1, 2, and 3 varieties of the 1972. Silver versions were struck at San Francisco from 1971 to 1976. The 1976 Bicentennial issue uses Dennis R. Williams' Independence Hall design on the reverse. The coin never caught on in commerce - vending machines wouldn't take it, and the public mostly left them in drawers.
