About This Series
The Royal Mint launched the Britannia gold coin in 1987, making it the UK's first official gold bullion coin. Philip Nathan designed the original standing Britannia reverse, which ran until 2013; since then, the reverse has changed every year. The coins started in 22-karat (.9167 fine) gold and switched to .9999 fine in 2013. Denominations range from 1/10 oz to 1 oz. The 1987 first-year coins carry a collector premium; annual reverse changes give buyers something new each year without needing to invest in multiple denominations. UK residents pay no capital gains tax on these coins since they are legal tender.
